For centuries, Varanasi has been a hub for the silk trade. Wearing a Banarasi sari on their wedding is every Indian girl’s dream. The delicate and minute zari work makes it very popular outfit during traditional functions and weddings. Weaving is typically done within household and majority of them are Momin Ansari Muslims. Ansari in Arabic means “helper”. For generations, they have passed on this unique craft expertise from father to sons using a room size foot-powered loom. 80% of the Muslims have been dominating the craft of weaving. While weaving is mostly male dominating (90% of weavers are man), nowadays even women and children are actively involved in both pre-loom and post loom finishing work.
